1994 - Computer generated 2D animation and a variety of mixed techniques Night Owl is just one of a dozen short experimental films I made when I was introduced to an old DOS based animation program by my friend Dave. Some have been lost over time and some I'm too ashamed to admit they exist (I caved in to pier pressure to do something "arty"). But Night Owl stays somehow memorable, probably because it was the first one I put music to, which elevated it so much I continued to do the same thing for loads of my other films. To be honest the music was an after thought. It started as another experiment, and as I found more and more techniques within the software I just kept creating new scenes until eventually I had enough material to string it together into a sequence. I remember getting a buzz out of seeing my first scene cutting to the next. Those were the days! I created a few more scenes to tie together the disparate elements and ended up with Night Owl. It gave me the confidence to plough on through a number of other films, but most importantly proved to my tutors on my art course that there was some value in pursuing this within my course work. For that opportunity I am extremely grateful. After that I did numerous artistic techniques including abstract and plastacine model animation, and learned how to sync up properly to the sound track. |
